How to Log an Expense in Hunter Vault

This is step 2 of the Hunter Vault tutorial, right after first-time setup. I open Quick Log from the round button in the tab bar, enter $42.50, pick Food & Groceries and add the store as a merchant. You'll also see the needs/wants tag on each category, the difference between Use as typed and Save new, and where to edit an expense if you got something wrong.

Your first expense also completes a quest, so you earn XP and level up.

Paid features shown: subcategories are Premium (mentioned, not used). Features and pricing can change; check the app for current details.

0:00 Open Quick Log

In this video you'll log your first expense. Your home screen already shows it as your first quest. Tap the round button in the middle of the tab bar.

That's Quick Log. It opens from any screen, so logging is always one tap away. Tap Add Expense.

0:21 Enter the amount

Start with the amount, using the keypad at the bottom. I'll enter $42.50.

0:33 Pick a category (needs vs wants)

Next, the category. Tap the category row and pick one. I'll choose Food and Groceries.

The tag next to it shows whether this counts as a need or a want in your budget. Subcategories are optional and part of Premium, so I'll skip them.

0:54 Choose the account and add a merchant

Pay From is the account the money comes out of. Right now that's the bank account from setup.

Merchant is optional, but it makes your history easier to read. Tap it and type the store name.

Use as typed logs it this once. Save new keeps the store for next time. I'll use it as typed.

1:19 Save the expense and earn XP

The date is today by default. Tap it if you're logging something from earlier. Then tap Add Expense.

Your first expense completes a quest, so you earn XP. I just went from level 2 to level 3. Tap Continue.

1:40 Find and edit your expenses

Now you're on your expenses for the month: the total, your top category, and the history. If you made a mistake, tap the pencil to edit it. Let's head back home.

The setup checklist is now 3 out of 5, and the next quest is adding your income. That's the next video. Links to download Hunter Vault are in the description.
