How This Installment Calculator Works

Many card installment programs are priced with a monthly add-on rate. The bank charges that percentage on the original amount every month for the whole term, then splits the total into equal monthly amortizations. A 0% plan is the same math with the add-on set to zero.

The Formula

Monthly amortization = Amount ÷ Months + Amount × Monthly add-on rate Total paid = Monthly amortization × Months + One-time fee Effective rate (EIR) = the monthly rate i where Cash price − Fee = Payment × (1 − (1 + i)^−Months) ÷ i

Why the Effective Rate Is Much Higher Than the Add-On

The add-on is charged on the full amount every month, but you're paying the principal down the whole time. By the last month you owe almost nothing, yet you're still paying add-on on the original price. That's why the effective interest rate (EIR), which is based on what you actually still owe, is far above the quoted rate: about 1.5 times the add-on on a 3-month plan and about 1.7 to 1.8 times on plans of 6 to 36 months.

Example (made-up numbers): ₱24,000 over 12 months at a 1% monthly add-on rate. The add-on is ₱240 a month, so the amortization is ₱2,000 + ₱240 = ₱2,240, and you pay ₱26,880 in total. Solving for the effective rate gives about 1.79% a month, or about 21.5% a year, not 1% and 12%. The BSP's own FAQ works the same way: ₱50,000 over 12 months at 1% comes to ₱4,666.67 a month.

This calculator gives estimates for information only. It assumes equal monthly amortizations, an add-on rate charged on the original amount, any one-time fee paid at the start, and no late or early payments. Banks set their own pricing, fees and rounding, and some quote a monthly effective rate instead of an add-on rate, so your statement and your bank's disclosure are the final word.
