The 50/30/20 rule is a simple budgeting framework popularized by Senator Elizabeth Warren in the book All Your Worth. It divides after-tax income into three buckets: half for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings and debt repayment.
Its strength is simplicity — three numbers, no complex spreadsheet, and a clear sense of proportion. It doesn't tell you exactly what to cut; it tells you whether your overall pattern is roughly on track.
The most common confusion is what counts as a "need." A need is anything you must pay to maintain your basic standard of living: housing, utilities, groceries, transportation to work, health insurance, and minimum debt payments. A streaming subscription is a want. Dining out is a want. Even a gym membership is technically a want. Being honest about the distinction is where the rule does its real work.
The 50/30/20 split is a starting point, not a universal law. If you live in a high-cost city where housing alone takes 40% of income, a 60/20/20 split may be more realistic. If you're aggressively paying down debt or saving for a house, 50/20/30 (flipping wants and savings) makes more sense. The custom mode in this calculator lets you find the split that fits your situation.
The 50/30/20 rule ignores the composition of each bucket — it doesn't help you choose between types of savings or prioritize debts. Think of it as a macro check: if your needs are consuming 70% of income, you know something is structurally off, even without tracking every line item. For more granular budgeting, pair it with an expense tracker.
