How Much Emergency Fund Do You Need?

The standard guidance is 3–6 months of essential expenses. "Essential expenses" means the money you must spend to survive and maintain your job — not your total spending or your income. This distinction matters: if you lose your job, you'll immediately cut wants and luxuries. Your true floor — rent, groceries, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments, transport — is what the fund covers.

Who Needs More Than 6 Months?

Nine to twelve months makes sense if you have a single income, work in a volatile industry, are self-employed, have dependents with health needs, or would take a long time to find new work in your field. More coverage = more security, but also a higher opportunity cost for money that could be invested.

Who Can Get by With 3 Months?

If you have a stable job in a high-demand field, a working partner with separate income, no dependents, and low fixed costs, 3 months may be adequate. If something changes (new baby, home purchase, career shift), revisit the target.

Where to Keep Your Emergency Fund

Emergency funds should be accessible within days — not invested in stocks, which can drop exactly when you need them. A high-yield savings account, money market account, or short-term CD ladder are common choices. The goal is stability and quick access, not maximum return.
