How to Set Up a Monthly Budget in Hunter Vault

This is step 5 of the Hunter Vault tutorial. Available to budget is your expected income for the month minus everything you've already planned. I go through the four budget types (fixed expenses, flexible spending, save for later, and track spending only), then give Shopping a $100 limit for this month and every month after.

Last, I use Save for later to build a travel fund, a sinking fund for costs that don't come every month: $150 goes in each month, and whatever you don't spend keeps building up. The free plan covers up to 8 budget categories.

Free plan: up to 8 budget categories. Recorded on a Premium account. Features and pricing can change; check the app for current details.

0:00 Open your budget: Available to budget

In this video you'll set up your monthly budget. Tap Profile at the bottom.

Then tap Budgets in the Armory.

At the top is Available to budget. That's your expected income for the month, minus everything you've already planned. Below it you see expected, planned, and what you've spent so far.

0:22 Your budget categories

Under that are your categories from setup. Each one shows how much you've spent and how much is left. Track spending only means there's no limit on that category yet.

0:33 The four budget types

Tap the info button to see the types of budget you can use.

Fixed expenses are regular costs, like rent and bills. Flexible spending is one shared amount for everyday spending. Save for later builds up money over a few months for costs that don't come every month. And track spending only just watches a category without a limit. Tap Got it.

0:58 Add a monthly limit to a category

Summary groups your budget the same way. Let's add a limit to Shopping. Tap the plus button, then Monthly budget.

Pick the category. I'll choose Shopping.

This is the category's budget page. Tap Monthly amount.

Enter the amount. I'll set $100. Then choose where it applies. I want this month and every month after, then tap Save.

1:26 Carry unused budget forward

Shopping now has $100 to spend this month. Turn on carry unused budget forward if you want leftover money added to next month. Let's go back.

1:36 Save for later: build a travel fund

Available to budget went down by $100. Next, let's save for a trip with Save for later. Tap Set up, then Create new category.

There's a short guide the first time. Tap Got it. Pick a suggestion, or type your own name. I'll pick Travel, and it's marked as a want.

Tap the amount and enter how much to set aside each month. I'll put $150. Tap Done, then Add.

Now $150 goes into the travel fund every month. Whatever you don't spend keeps building up. On the free plan you can budget up to 8 categories. Let's go back.

That's your monthly budget. Next, we'll add more accounts, like savings and a credit card. Links to download Hunter Vault are in the description.
