// vs Habitica

A Habitica alternative for the one quest Habitica
can't track: your money.

Habitica is one of the best ways to turn habits and to-dos into an RPG. It just has no idea what you spent. Hunter Vault, our own app, is built on the same idea, with quests, ranks and penalties that run on real spending, budgets, bills and debt.

  • Free to start
  • No account needed
  • Works offline

// what each app tracks

Habitica tracks checkmarks. Hunter Vault tracks money.

Both apps run on the same loop: do the thing, earn XP, level up, and pay a price when you slip. The difference is what counts as "the thing".

In Habitica it's any task you define. That makes it great for building almost any habit, but a money Habit like "didn't impulse-buy" only knows that you clicked it, not what you spent. Hunter Vault only does money, so every quest, rank and penalty is tied to actual numbers: what you logged, what's left in each budget, and whether your debts got paid.

  • Habitica rewards ticking off a task, whatever the task is
  • Hunter Vault rewards logging, budgeting and paying down real amounts
  • Habitica has no amounts, budgets or spending reports
  • Hunter Vault has no workouts, chores or study tasks

// two approaches

Same genre, different games.

Both turn self-improvement into an RPG. One covers your whole life; the other goes deep on one part of it.

Habitica

A life RPG.

Write your own Habits, Dailies and To Do's, then earn XP and gold for checking them off. Missed Dailies cost health. Choose a class at level 10, collect gear, hatch pets and raise them into mounts, and run quests with a party of up to 30 people.

Hunter Vault

A money RPG.

Log spending and income, set budgets, and track bills, debts and savings goals. System-set daily and weekly quests, E-to-S hunter ranks and streak multipliers reward consistency, and gold penalties hit when you overspend or let a debt slide.

// honest take

Where Habitica is honestly the better pick.

We'd rather you find the right tool than the wrong one.

Choose Habitica if you want one RPG for everything: workouts, chores, study, taking medication, creative projects. It's free, open source, runs on the web as well as phones, and its party quests and Challenges add real social accountability. With 5M+ downloads on Google Play (October 2026), it has a large player base and years of community guides.

If your goals aren't about money, or you only want a light money habit like "no impulse buys today", Habitica already does the job well.

// where it fits

Built for when the habit you keep failing is money.

In Hunter Vault, logging an expense clears a daily task, each budget shows what's left this month, and Safe-to-Spend subtracts bills, savings and debt from your balance before telling you what's free. Ranks, streaks and penalties are all tied to those real numbers, not to a checkbox.

It also keeps your budget on your phone by default, with no account needed to start. That matters here: Habitica's own task form warns users not to enter sensitive personal information, because everything is saved to its servers.

  • A "track spending" Daily still leaves you guessing where it went
  • Gold rewards for not buying things don't show your real balance
  • You want budgets, bills and debt in the same progress loop
  • You'd rather keep financial details off a server

You can use both: Habitica for habits, chores and workouts, Hunter Vault for money. A Habitica Daily like "log today's spending" can point you to Hunter Vault each day. Solo Leveling fan? Here's how Hunter Vault works as a System for your money.

// questions

Frequently asked questions

Only as a workaround. Habitica has no money features: no amounts, budgets, money accounts or spending reports. People create Habits like "logged an expense" or custom Rewards priced in gold to mirror real purchases, and keep the actual numbers somewhere else. Habitica also asks users not to put sensitive personal information in tasks, because all account data is saved to its servers.

For money, yes. For everything else, no. Hunter Vault only tracks finances: expenses, income, budgets, bills, debts and savings goals. If you want one RPG for workouts, chores and study, Habitica is the better fit, and you can use both.

Yes. The core app is free. An optional subscription costs $5 a month on the web, or $48 for 12 months, and app-store prices vary by country. It adds perks such as buying Gems with gold, a monthly mystery item set and Mystic Hourglasses. Prices checked October 7, 2026.

In Habitica, missed Dailies cost health. Run out and you lose a level, all your gold and one piece of equipment you can buy back. In Hunter Vault, penalties cost in-app gold only: breaking a streak, going more than 25% over a budget's weekly share, or a month with active debts and no payments. Your level and rank aren't taken away.

Yes, and they don't overlap. Use Habitica for habits, chores, study and workouts, and Hunter Vault for spending, budgets, bills and debt. A Habitica Daily like "log today's spending" can even point you to Hunter Vault each day.

Habitica requires an account, and your tasks are stored on its servers. Hunter Vault's core app needs no account: budget data stays on your device unless you turn on an online feature like cloud sync, the Huntee AI assistant or Smart Import from screenshots and PDFs, which need sign-in.

Core budgeting is free and has no ads. The free tier covers up to 8 budgets, 3 recurring entries, 5 accounts, 3 debts and 2 savings goals. Hunter Elite is a one-time $15.99 upgrade that removes those limits.
