Modern Warfare 4 is out, and the price on the store page is the easy part.

Call of Duty is a full-price game that also sells a new pass every season. On consoles, you pay for online play on top. And this year there’s a new wrinkle: unlike the last two Call of Duty games, MW4 isn’t on Game Pass at launch.

This guide adds up what MW4 really costs over its first year, platform by platform, from official prices. Activision hasn’t announced MW4’s season prices yet, so for those we use the Black Ops 7 pattern and say so every time.

Quick Answer: How Much Does Modern Warfare 4 Cost?

Modern Warfare 4 costs $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Vault Edition on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC) and Nintendo Switch 2, as of October 23, 2026, before tax. It isn’t on Game Pass until Holiday 2027. On consoles, add an online subscription. If you buy BlackCell every season at its Black Ops 7 price, your first year costs $249.94 before any online fee.

What Modern Warfare 4 Costs: Editions and Prices

The Xbox store’s FAQ puts it plainly: “The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Standard Edition is $69.99 and the Vault Edition is $99.99.” The PlayStation Store, Steam and the Nintendo eShop list the same US prices.

A few details change the math:

• Vault is roughly Standard plus one BlackCell. $69.99 plus the $30 upgrade is $99.99. In Black Ops 7, a season of BlackCell cost $29.99. So Vault doesn’t discount BlackCell. It bundles one season with extra cosmetics.
• Which BlackCell season you get depends on when you buy. Activision says buying Vault before or during Season 1 unlocks Season 1 BlackCell, and buying it later unlocks the current season. Either way, it covers one season only.
• Only digital copies upgrade. Vault is sold digitally only, and Activision says physical copies can’t be upgraded. There’s no physical PC version.
• The loyalty discount is over. The 10% off Vault for owners of a recent Call of Duty applied only to pre-orders and pre-purchases, and Activision’s FAQ says it was “valid until October 23, 2026.”
• PC needs space. Activision’s PC specs list “115 GB - SSD required.” If your drive is full, that’s a hidden cost.

Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?

No. In April, Xbox announced that “future Call of Duty titles won’t join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch.” They arrive “during the following holiday season,” about a year later. The Xbox store page for MW4 says it’s “not available on Game Pass until Holiday 2027.”

• Game Pass Premium ($14.99 a month) excludes Call of Duty titles entirely, per the Game Pass plans page.
• Game Pass Ultimate ($22.99 a month) still includes older Call of Duty games: Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III. Xbox cut Ultimate from $29.99 in the same April update.

For the last two Call of Duty launches, Game Pass Ultimate was the cheap way in. For MW4’s first year, everyone pays at least $69.99. If you already have Ultimate and you’re happy playing Black Ops 7 for a year, waiting costs you nothing extra. Just don’t start a Game Pass plan for MW4, because it won’t be there.

Do You Need PS Plus, Game Pass or Switch Online?

On consoles, yes. Each store listing says online multiplayer needs a subscription. Here are the cheapest tiers that cover it, as of October 23, 2026:

The Seasonal Part: Battle Pass, BlackCell and COD Points

This is where the yearly cost stops being fixed. Infinity Ward’s roadmap puts Season 1 on November 6, 2026, two weeks after launch. Activision hasn’t announced MW4’s Battle Pass or BlackCell prices yet. Here’s what they cost in Black Ops 7, last year’s game:

What that means for your wallet:

• Bigger bundles are up to 23% cheaper per point. That’s the nudge. The cheapest bundle is still the one that covers exactly what you came to buy. Leftover points pull you back to the store.
• The earn-back makes the Battle Pass cheap, if you finish it. In Black Ops 7, the 1,100 points you could earn back included 200 on the final page. Finish each pass, and one $9.99 purchase can fund every pass for the year. Stop short, and you’re topping up before the next season.
• Points stay on one platform. Activision’s support page says COD Points “are tied to platform accounts.” If you play on PS5 and PC, your points don’t follow you. Windows Central reports that unspent Black Ops 7 points carry into MW4 on the same platform.
• Store bundles are the real open end. Operator and weapon bundles are priced in points, and nothing caps them. We don’t add them to the totals below, because only you know that number.

What Modern Warfare 4 Really Costs in Year One

Here’s the first year, launch to roughly the next Call of Duty, by how you play. The totals use US list prices from October 23, 2026, before tax. They assume six seasons and Black Ops 7’s pass prices, and they leave out store bundles.

The same paths on every platform:

Online play is PS Plus Essential for 12 months ($79.99), Game Pass Essential for 12 months ($119.88) or Nintendo Switch Online for 12 months ($19.99). PC adds none.

What stands out:

• For heavy spenders, the game is the smallest line. BlackCell every season adds $179.94 a year, more than double the $69.99 game.
• That’s a subscription in all but name. $179.94 a year is about $15 a month, more than double a year of PS Plus Essential ($79.99).
• Your platform changes the floor by $120. Online play costs nothing on PC, $19.99 on Switch 2, and $119.88 on Xbox.
• A disciplined Battle Pass player pays $9.99 for the whole year. That’s the cheapest way to get every season, and it depends on finishing each pass.

Warzone: The $0 Option

If you mostly play battle royale, you may not need MW4 at all. Activision calls Warzone “the ultimate free to play combat experience,” and its PlayStation listing shows it as free with no PS Plus requirement. Activision’s announcement says that from Season 1, Warzone “will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression.”

Is Modern Warfare 4 Worth Buying at Launch?

This isn’t a review. It’s a money check. Buying now makes sense if all three are true:

1. You can pay cash from money you set aside, without touching bills or your emergency fund.
2. You’ll play multiplayer now, while your friends are.
3. You’ve counted the whole year, including online play on your console and the seasons you’ll actually buy.

Reasons to wait:

• You mostly play Warzone. It’s free, and it picks up MW4 content from Season 1.
• You have Game Pass Ultimate. MW4 arrives there around Holiday 2027, and Black Ops 7 is still included until then.
