How to Organize Categories and Subcategories

I add a Subscriptions category from the suggestions, which fills in the icon, colour and type, and leave it with no limit. The type, needs or wants, is used in your spending reports. Category details is where you rename a category, change its icon, colour and type, or delete it. Deleting asks where to move its transactions, so nothing disappears from your history.

Subcategories split one category into smaller parts and are a Premium feature. I add Eating Out under Food & Groceries and log a $24 lunch to it; spending that isn't in a subcategory shows as Other. Removing a subcategory you've used keeps its name on your past spending. The free plan includes up to 8 categories.

Paid features shown: subcategories (Premium). Recorded on a Premium account. The free plan includes up to 8 categories. Features and pricing can change; check the app for current details.

0:00 Your categories

In this video you'll organize your categories: add a new one, edit one, and split a category into subcategories. Tap Profile, then Budgets.

Tap Categories. Every category is listed with what you've spent. The ones with a limit show what's left. The rest are tracked without a limit.

0:23 Add a new category

To add a category, tap plus. Choose Track spending if you don't want a limit yet.

Tap Create new category. Type a name, or pick a suggestion. I'll use Subscriptions. It fills in the icon, the colour and the type.

The type, needs or wants, is used in your spending reports. Tap Add.

Subscriptions is ready. There's no limit on it, and you can set a budget any time. Go back.

0:57 Edit or delete a category

Now open Food and Groceries. Category details is where you change the name, icon, colour and type, or delete the category.

If you delete a category, the app asks where to move its transactions, so nothing disappears from your history. I'll cancel.

1:16 Add a subcategory

Subcategories split one category into smaller parts. They're a Premium feature. Scroll down and tap Add subcategory. I'll add Eating Out.

Spending that isn't in a subcategory yet shows up as Other.

1:33 Log an expense with a subcategory

Let's use it. Tap the Quick Log button, then Add Expense. Lunch was $24.

Choose Food and Groceries, then tap the subcategory row under it and pick Eating Out. Tap Add Expense.

Back on Food and Groceries, Eating Out now has its own total, separate from everything else.

1:57 Rename or remove a subcategory

Tap a subcategory to rename or remove it. If you remove one you've used, your past spending keeps its name.

On the free plan you can have up to 8 categories. Next, we'll start the Plan Your Money playlist. Links to download Hunter Vault are in the description.
