What Is Portfolio?

In short

The complete collection of investments you own — your stocks, funds, bonds, and anything else held to grow your money.

Your portfolio is the full loadout of everything you have invested, viewed as one unit. Thinking in terms of the whole portfolio — rather than individual picks — is what lets you judge your real diversification and risk.

A beginner portfolio can be refreshingly simple: a single broad, low-cost index fund or ETF is a complete, diversified portfolio on its own. Complexity is optional, not a requirement.

For example

If you own one total-market ETF, a bit of cash, and a bond fund, that mix is your portfolio — the same way your characters, gear, and currency together make up your account.

Key points

  • The sum of all your investments, seen as one.
  • Can be a single fund — simple still counts.
  • The mix determines your overall risk and return.
